Care & Cleaning

At Zemba, we design school bags to be durable, comfortable, and ready for your everyday adventures — from classrooms to field trips. To help your bag look great and last longer, follow these simple care and cleaning tips.

1. Daily Care

  • Store Properly: When not in use, hang your bag or place it in a cool, dry area. Avoid cramming it into small, damp spaces.
  • Avoid Overloading: Don’t overload compartments beyond capacity. Excessive weight can strain zippers and seams.
  • Keep Sharp Objects Protected: Place pens, pencils, or other sharp items in a pencil case to prevent punctures inside the bag.
  • Close All Zippers: Before carrying or storing, ensure all zippers and fasteners are secured to protect contents and prolong zipper life.

2. Spot Cleaning

For light dirt, stains, or marks:

  1. Empty the Bag: Remove books, stationery, and accessories.
  2. Shake Out Debris: Turn the bag upside down and gently shake to remove loose dirt or crumbs.
  3. Use a Mild Detergent: Mix a small amount of mild liquid detergent with lukewarm water.
  4. Dab the Stain: Use a soft cloth or sponge dipped in the solution to gently blot the stained area.
  5. Rinse with Clean Water: Wipe off detergent residue with a clean damp cloth.
  6. Air Dry: Let the bag air dry completely before using it again.

3. Deep Cleaning

When your bag needs a more thorough clean:

  1. Empty & Shake: Remove all contents and shake out loose debris.
  2. Brush Off Dust: Use a soft brush to remove surface dust and dirt.
  3. Prepare Cleaning Solution: Mix mild detergent with water (no bleach or harsh cleaners).
  4. Clean Gently: Using a soft brush or sponge, work on all fabric surfaces — inside and out.
  5. Rinse Well: Wipe with a clean damp cloth to remove soap residue.
  6. Air Dry Only: Hang the bag upside down in a shaded, well-ventilated area. Do not expose to direct sunlight for long periods.

4. Cleaning Zippers & Hardware

  • Zippers: Wipe metal or plastic teeth with a damp cloth. If a zipper sticks, gently rub a small amount of graphite (from a pencil) or zipper lubricant.
  • Buckles & Straps: Clean buckles with mild soapy water and dry thoroughly to prevent rust.

5. Stain-Specific Tips

  • Ink Marks: Dab lightly with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol. Test in a hidden area first.
  • Mud & Dirt: Let mud dry completely, then brush off before wiping with a damp cloth.
  • Grease or Oil: Apply a small amount of mild dish soap directly to the spot, let sit for a few minutes, then blot gently.

6. Do NOT Do

  • ✘ Machine Wash or Dry: This may damage padding, shape, or hardware.
  • Bleach or Harsh Chemicals: Can weaken fabric and fade colors.
  • Iron the Bag: Heat can warp material and zippers.
  • Wring the Bag: This can distort shape and affect stitching.

7. Odour Control

  • Air It Out: Leave the bag open in a well-ventilated area.
  • Baking Soda: Sprinkle a small amount inside overnight, then shake out to absorb odors.

8. Storage Tips

  • Keep Dry: Ensure the bag is completely dry before storage to prevent mildew.
  • Use Dust Covers: If storing for long periods, cover with a breathable cloth or bag cover.
  • Avoid Weight on Top: Do not stack heavy objects on stored bags — this can deform them.
